Mutation is one half of the Evolution system — the DLC’s signature fork, officially described in the launch materials. On this path your run can duplicate item effects, and the enemies mutate with you: mutant dinosaurs that spread acid. The numbers below are limited to what the developers published; exact duplication rates and acid damage are to be verified in-game.

How the Mutation Path Works

The core effect

Mutation offers a chance to duplicate item effects — one item, twice the effect, with no second copy needed in your inventory.

The fuel: Mutagen

Mutagen is the path’s resource, dropped as you play. The base drop rate was raised from 2% to 3% in v1.2.0.1 (November 3, 2026) — a same-week economy buff, and the one hard number on this page (1.2 Update).

The cost: your enemies mutate too

The mutation is not yours alone — the path’s enemy set is mutant dinosaurs that spread acid on the ground. Area denial that grows the longer waves run.

Mutation vs Mecha — The Real Trade

The Evolution fork is one decision with two invoices, both official:

  • Mutation buys spikes. Item-effect duplication is multiplicative with your best items, and the v1.2.0.1 Mutagen buff (2% → 3%) made the engine warm up sooner. The invoice: acid everywhere, so builds that stand still pay full price — see the positioning notes in the Gameplay.
  • Mecha buys control. Reinforcing weapons with parts and dismantling mechanized ones in the shop is steady, recyclable scaling. The invoice: laser-firing mecha dinosaurs that leave slowing oil slicks — a different movement tax.
  • The fork is identity. Half-measures collect both invoices; a strong run commits. Which side suits which of the 10 Characters is exactly the theorycraft that waits for verified kits.

Mutation Run Checklist

    • Patched to v1.2.0.1 or later — the Mutagen buff (3% base) is the difference between a slow and a workable Mutation economy.
    • Item Set toggle on — the path’s items live in the DLC pool (Items).
    • A build plan that survives acid — mobile damage beats turrets; regeneration and shields soften ground-denial pressure.
    • A Mutagen plan for the Enemy Army — the same enemies that drop your fuel are the ones spreading the acid.

Mutations FAQ

What does Mutation do in Primal Dread?

Gives your run a chance to duplicate item effects, powered by Mutagen drops. In exchange, the path's enemies are mutant dinosaurs that spread acid.

What is the Mutagen drop rate?

3% base since the v1.2.0.1 patch on November 3, 2026 — up from 2% at launch. It is the only officially published number on the path.

Is Mutation better than Mecha?

Neither is strictly better: Mutation spikes harder via item duplication but fills the field with acid; Mecha scales steadily via parts but brings laser dinosaurs and slowing oil. Commit to one per run.
